At around 2 a.m. on Thursday, New York State Police received several reports of a reverse traffic eastbound driver on the west lane of I-90 in the Batavia area. The soldiers observed the vehicle, which was still traveling in the wrong direction, and almost collided with other vehicles, police said.
After the vehicle passed through the grassy median, the driver continued east before stopping abruptly on the shoulder, officials said. In an interview with the driver, Pietro Russo, 46, of Honeoye, NY, was reportedly intoxicated.
He was taken into custody, transported and treated at SP Henrietta where his blood alcohol level was determined to be 0.22%, almost three times the legal limit of intoxication, according to police.
Russo was charged with aggravated DWI. He was handed over to a sober third party and released on returnable appearance tickets to the Court of the City of Leroy on October 5, 2021.
No injuries were reported.
