After nearly five years of activity and repeated financial difficulties, Troy bagel bakery and Psychedelicatessen cafe will close after service on Friday, June 14, according to a Long and unusually straightforward Facebook post by owner Laura Kerrone. She writes, in part:
No matter how tasty our bagels are, the reality is that every time we’ve ‘crossed’ a backhand we’ve really dug a hole deeper – one that I realized there was no way to. background. The reality is that, financially, I probably should have closed my doors a few years ago. The reality is, I just couldn’t give up on my dream, something that I just KNOW was important, that people loved so much. I don’t regret digging myself deeper – not for a second – but I have reached a point where there is no recovery.
The bagels were never the problem. As Susie Davidson Powell wrote in her Times Union review in late 2014, about four months after Psychedelicatessen opened:
More than 150 miles upriver from New York City, a small bagel shop prepares authentic upstate bagels. The blister-free crust gives a perfect crunch, soft and elastic, no dense dough, a subtle flavor of the natural aromas of yeast, high gluten flour, salt and slow fermentation overnight. You might be in Manhattan, but you’re on River Street in Troy. The baker is an environmentalist and a “simple foodie” whose mission is to bring “damn good bagels” to the capital region.

As for Kerrone’s future, she writes:
I’ve never experienced something so heartbreaking, panicking, heartbreaking, always stressful and tiring in my entire life, and honestly, I need a fucking break. I need to defrag, for a minute at least.
I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do with myself after this. I have a few ideas, but I have a hell of a financial mess to deal with, so that’s my main focus right now, saving my remaining skin. I will need a job soon so if you are in this business help a girl – I have crazy skills and thrive on hard work. (No seriously, I’ll need a job. No, I’m not going back to a nuclear power plant. I’m going to clean the toilet and live in a box.)
